CEO Interview: Truman Du on the New ZWCAD+
September 19, 2012
Introduction: Truman Du was interviewed by Jan Pajerchin, President of Global CAD Group, about his view and thoughts on the newly-released ZWCAD+. ZWCAD+ is ZWSOFT’s latest innovation in the CAD industry. It is the next generation of the well-received ZWCAD, a proven CAD solution with 320,000 satisfied customers worldwide. Now equipped with a new and superior engine, ZWCAD+ takes design experience and efficiency to a whole new level.
Jan: What inspired you to create the new ZWCAD+, and what benefits could the customers expect from this?
Truman:Our inspiration to create ZWCAD+ comes from our aspiration to satisfy our customers’ needs to the fullest extent. The demands from our customers have been overwhelming over the last few years for a more advanced product. They have higher expectations for the next generation ZWCAD. Our customers are number one, and we strive to meet their needs in the best way possible, and now ZWCAD+ does this.
The benefit that ZWCAD+ will bring to our customers is the experience as a whole. ZWCAD+ offers users a fluid experience when completing a design task. If you are working with ZWCAD+ for a week, 8 hours a day, you will feel the difference between ZWCAD+ and other low cost CAD software.
As it is true with every new product, ZWCAD+ still has some improvements to make. Because ZWCAD+ is built upon a completely new engine, some features provided by ZWCAD 2012 are yet to be supported in ZWCAD+. Nevertheless, our customers will be surprised at the fact that ZWCAD+ is able to solve the design efficiency problem, which is the fundamental problem that other low cost CAD software have. Our customers deserve a more efficient and budget friendly CAD solution, and now ZWCAD+ is a better choice for them.
Jan: Could you describe the main advantages of ZWCAD+ over your competitors?
Truman: ZWCAD+ is not just a simple upgrade of ZWCAD. The whole software is completely built from the ground up. The new engine is developed by the ZWCAD+ team, most of whom are veterans in the CAD industry. The new engine ensures even greater .dwg support, better memory control, and code-level API compatibility. It makes ZWCAD+ a better, faster, and more accurate CAD solution. More innovation has been made to ZWCAD+, such as SmartMouse, and File Compare, which will give users a whole-new design experience.
The biggest advantage of ZWCAD+ over other low cost CAD software is the speed in daily operation and while opening large drawings. Let me give you an example. When opening drawings that are between 10 to 50 MB, ZWCAD+ is the fastest. Among all the low cost CAD software, only ZWCAD+ can open and edit drawings that are over 100 MB.
The tagline of ZWCAD+ is New Core. New Possibilities. I think it best exemplifies how ZWCAD+ is different from ZWCAD and other CAD software. With the built-in new and superior engine, ZWCAD+ allows designers and developers to think big with more possibilities.
Jan: ZWCAD+ has been released for about two months now. How do your customers like it? What do they say about ZWCAD+?
Truman: Earlier this month, I received an email from an American user telling me how impressed he was to see the fast speed when opening large drawings with ZWCAD+. Also, we constantly receive exciting feedbacks and comments from our users in many countries. They tell us they like our new feature SmartMouse, or thank us for the improvements made to Tool Palettes, APIs and the new user interface, etc. In China, we’ve also had many major clients who have bought or upgraded to the new ZWCAD+. A garden design company has its 30 designers use only ZWCAD+ in their daily work. These designers have intensive design work to do every day. Now they are more comfortable with ZWCAD+ because it brings to them a fluid and efficient design experience.
Meanwhile, we’ve received a lot of feedback and higher expectations from our customers. We listened to them, and released an update version in early September with even better stability. Our customers can rest assured that ZWCAD+ will continue to progress even faster in the following days.
All in all, I’m more than thrilled to learn that we have helped increase these designers’ work efficiency with the new ZWCAD+, and they love it. We aimed to ease designers’ tough daily work with ZWCAD+. We wanted them focus more on their work instead of the software they use. I believe we’ve made it!
Jan: It seems that a lot of applications which used to run only on AutoCAD can be ported to ZWCAD+ easily now. Could you tell us more about ZWCAD+’s new APIs?
Truman:Yes this is true. We’re really excited to have had more applications ported to ZWCAD+ in the past few months. The new APIs are among the most exciting highlights of ZWCAD+. We call it code-level compatible, which means the new APIs allow developers to port their applications to ZWCAD+ with only a few modifications and in much less time.
Ever since the release of ZWCAD+ Beta, we have been working closely with a lot of application developers across the globe. After the successful migration of CADprofi to ZWCAD+, we were once again amazed by how quickly more developers ported their applications, including CivilCAD onto ZWCAD+. These successful cases speak volumes about the quality of ZWCAD+’s APIs. We are confident that in the coming days, more users will be able to enjoy additional custom design solutions that integrates ZWCAD+’s powerful CAD capability.
We really appreciate our developers’ effort in migrating applications to ZWCAD+. It is a win-win. They can make the most out of our huge existing base of 320,000 customers to provide their applications or solutions through the reliable ZWSOFT worldwide partner network. But we are more excited to offer our customers an all-in-one CAD solution at a compelling low cost together with these developers.
Jan: Along with the release of ZWCAD+, you also rolled out the new ZWCAD Mechanical for manufacturing. Could you tell us more about it?
Truman: ZWCAD Mechanical is ZWCAD+ for manufacturing, and includes all the functionalities of ZWCAD+. With comprehensive libraries of standard-based parts and mechanical tools for design and drafting, ZWCAD Mechanical accelerates the mechanical design process, and helps designers save hours of design and rework. It allows designers to spend more time innovating rather than managing workflow issues. Among many of its highlights, there are local customized enterprise standards and international standards, powerful mechanical dimensioning, a comprehensive built-in Part Library and Part Builder. If you’re a ZWCAD or ZWCAD+ user in the manufacturing industry, then I suggest that you give ZWCAD Mechanical a try. You’ll be surprised.
Jan: Do you have plans to provide more vertical solutions like ZWCAD Mechanical?
Truman: I’ve mentioned it earlier, but let me say it again. Customers are number one, and we will continue to provide more value to them. We created ZWCAD Mechanical in order to test and see whether ZWCAD+’s new APIs can support a huge and excellent application. With ZWCAD Mechanical’s success, it has proved that the API capability is powerful enough. Therefore, we offer this solution to our customers in the manufacturing industry to ease their mechanical design process.
Besides ZWCAD Mechanical, we’re also considering working on architectural solutions. Many of our clients and business partners have expressed their hopes for such a solution. We have to provide them with a better architectural solution, either by cooperating with our developers or creating one on our own.
As you might know, there’re thousands of applications based on CAD platforms. ZWSOFT will continue to focus on the CAD platform and provide the best technology, while at the same time cooperating with developers worldwide to bring more vertical solutions to ZWCAD+ that will better satisfy our customers. This is our strategy for the vertical solutions. For ZWSOFT, if there’s an excellent developer in a certain field or industry, we will choose to cooperate with them, and recommend their products, instead of creating one by ourselves. I believe this way is better for the future of ZWSOFT and our developer network. It is our long-term strategy to create such a business ecosystem.
Jan: What can we expect in ZWCAD+ 2013? Can you unveil some of the plans for future ZWCAD+ versions?
Truman: Our future versions of ZWCAD+ greatly rely on the input and feedback from our users. We strive to fulfill their wants and needs and will try to integrate them into ZWCAD+ 2013 and beyond. For the next version, we will provide more efficient drawing and editing tools to our users in order to help them finish their designs promptly and precisely. We plan to add Dynamic Block support in ZWCAD+ 2013. Also, we will make improvements on the language support for the non-English versions. More micro-innovations like SmartMouse are expected in ZWCAD+ 2013. We’re happy to see that more designers are using SmartMouse in their daily work to execute certain commands.
We believe that ZWCAD+ will blaze a new trail and that has its own characteristics, and will meet the needs of its own users. But ZWCAD+ will also preserve and strengthen the compatibility of file format to some mainstream software, for example, the DWG file format. In the future, ZWCAD+ will also support portable platforms like the iPad and Android, as well as integrate cloud-computing technology.
Jan: When can we expect ZWCAD+ to be available on mobile devices such as iPad?
Truman: As I mentioned above, mobile application is the industrial trend of the future, and we’re keeping a close eye on it. Our main focus is to continue to utilize our current resources on improving the ZWCAD+ platform. This is the core value of our business. We do have a Beta version of ZWCAD+ available on iPad now. Our team is still working on it and we hope to integrate it with the PC version to provide a better solution for designers.
I believe that PC+MOBILE+CLOUD are the future business model of CAD software, and we will continuously invest resources in mobile design software, such as iOS and Android phones and tablets. In 2-3 years, we will have a better position with the PC+MOBILE+CLOUD model.
Jan: Could you tell more about the upgrade policy?
Truman: There’s no forced annual upgrade with ZWCAD+. This is our bottom line. If our customers are happy using ZWCAD, they can keep it and enjoy the benefits brought to their design work. If they would like to experience a faster and more accurate CAD still at an affordable price, they can always opt in to the latest ZWCAD+. When upgrading from any previous ZWCAD version to ZWCAD+, they only have to pay a one-year upgrade fee. It’s a much more friendly upgrade policy.
ZWCAD+ is an innovative product, and we’ll keep innovating on our customers’ behalf without compromising. The ZWCAD+ team has been investing huge amounts of resources to bring new features to ZWCAD+ and create more value for our customers. We do believe that the annual upgrade version will help our customers increase their design efficiency and remain competitive in their industry.
Starting from ZWCAD+ 2012, we’ve rolled out a new 3-year upgrade package for ZWCAD+. With the offer, our customers can receive annual upgrades to the latest ZWCAD+ version at a more economical price for three consecutive years. It ensures that our customers will be kept up to date with the latest innovation from ZWCAD+. Customers can start utilizing this offer starting this year.
Jan: One last question, why did you name the new 2D software ZWCAD+? What does ZWCAD+ mean to you and to the customers?
Truman: There is a story behind the name. Early this year, we held the 3rd global partner conference in China with over 100 partners from around the world. There was a free talk session about the new name for the next generation ZWCAD during the conference. When I heard someone suggest ZWCAD+ to me, I loved it right away, and we decided to go ahead with the name ZWCAD+.
This name change signifies many breakthroughs. The “+”, meaning more, distinguishes our desired market position, as a new and better product with fundamental quality improvements. ZWCAD+ will continue to bring more excitingly new and enhanced features, integrate more applications, reach out to a wider product line including mobile devices, and as always, create more values for our customers.
Jan: Thank you for your time.
Truman:Thank you for having me.
