etching/scribing

Any hints on etching/scribing text and numerals without having to break and trim the curves so they don't overlap or abut?

This is single line text , created in sketch and exploded.

Thanks,

Nick.

Never mind - it looks like 3d engrave does ok, though it won't engrave deeper than the curves. 2D engrave on QuikMill doesn"t seem to work with curves.

Thanks again,

Nick.

I really appreciate your response - its speeded up the etching a whole lot.

I hope I can be of equal assistance in the future.

thanks again,

Hi John

I appreciate the hard work it takes to produce a quality single-line font, thank you for making your font available to the other customers.

Ockert,
Attached is the font I created with the VX font tool. It duplicated the normal stencils used by a Hermes pantograph. Just add the ross.asc file to your local directory and add the font to the vx_font_table file. I attached mine for reference. VX has some single line fonts, but they are pretty bad. In Type3 their font tool traces users defined curves, allows the user to attach the ascii description, then save as a font. The VX font tool is a little cumbersome. You create the same curves, but the definition is based on grid coordinates that must entered manually for each character. While using True Type fonts is easy for us on the computers, they take twice as long to machine due to the island of curves that True Type letters must have by definition.

Good Luck

Hallo John

What 'single line font' are you using? If not within VX, can it be downloaded?

Nick,
Use 3X Nurbs Surface Engraving. It will machine the curves directly. Without a suppot surface the retarcts will go to the clearance plane, with a support surface the retracts will be the safe distance. If you can use vertical thick the depth (-) can exceed the cutter radius. If you use surface thick it must be less. Don;t really understand why the limitation. We have a single line font for our engraving and this is the method we use.

Hope it helps.

Hi Nick

3D Engrave is the tool. QM Engrave requires "closed" characters, like the True-Type lettering that you can get via the ReadySketch toolbar.
