G'day Guys/Girls

I am getting into the 3D thing of zw (never done 3D before) So I need a little advice.
I would like to know how I can remove sections of a solid to make holes and hollow sections in it?
I can draw it, extrude it and render it but, any holes in the shape are not recognised as such and are automatically rendered also.

Same applies to a hollow beam section. How do I remove (or leave out ) the end caps the rendering puts in? I tried Shell command but either it doesn't work or I'm doing it wrong.

And finally: Is there a ZWCAD 3D tutorial somewhere I can access?

TIA, for your help.Smile

Dear Damo,

Nice to see you!

If you want to make a hole in a solid, you can use SUBSTRACT function in 3D editing. First is to draw a base solid, and then draw Cylinder as the hole and put it within the solid, so they have intersection with each other. Then use SUBSTRACT funciton, select the solid first ,enter, select the cylinder, enter. You will see the cylinder has been removed from the solid and leaves a hole.

about your second question. Do you mean that you what to remove a face when shell?

To learn ZWCAD 3D functions you can refer to the ZWCAD tutorials:
http://download3.zwcad.com/Tech/2010/ZWCAD2010_Tutorial.rar
teaching movie:http://www.zwcad.org/support.php?id=3
And also in ZWCAD help document

Daniel ...
Again mate, you are the man. Thanks for the advice.
Exactly what I was looking for.
The other thing I wish to know is, How do I make an extrusion, when rendered, appear hollow? ie. RHS tubing.

Another query if I may... When I Print Preview with rendering displayed, it previews and prints a wireframe model.
How can I get my 3D sketch to print WITH the rendering intact?Confused

Damo my friend,
I'm not so clear about your first question. But for the second one, ZWCAD doesn't support shade plot for the time being. We support to plot in Hidden style and Wireframe now.

Ok thanks for the reply.
So... We cannot Print our 3D designs as a rendered image for presentation or demonstration.Confused I guess we will have to make do with printscreen shots.
This is sad. I just presumed we could and I was doing it wrong.
When would it likely be possible?

As for my earlier question...

please excuse pic quality. (done roughly)
In the first pic we can see a 150x150x6 RHS hollow tube section
In the second pic we see it rendered but, it's obviously a closed beam. ie. not open at the end.
How do I make it appear "open" at the ends?
Any help on this would be ... Awesome.!!

Dear Damo,

I think, if you want to make the end open , you should use SHELL command and remove an end face.

And for shade plot, it's still in developing right now. If we have any further information, we will inform you. Actually, if you need to do a lot of 3D design and communication, I suggest ZW3D software to you. It's a completely 3D modeling software. You can view it here: zw3d.zwcad.org

Another little tip or some help please.
I am trying to create a 3d shape using some splines and a couple of lines which I have laid out (2D) and wish to extrude to a specified height.
Trouble is, I cannot seem to get these objects to extrude - at all..!

I have read through the help file on extrude, But it's not working for me.
What am I doing wrong?
How do I "Join"splines and lines into a Polyline for extrusion?Confused

Hi Damo,

When you want to extrude an area rounded by spline, arc, line and pline, make sure they have created a CLOSED area, then use REGION command and select them all to make it a region, then you can extrude the region, and get a 3D solid.
