 Bottle Closure Thread Profiles?

Do you have any technical guides on bottle closure thread profiles?

I have the Bottle Closure pdf from VX but I need a guide on designing the thread profiles themselves.

Thanks!

Try this site:

http://www.threadspecs.com

It depends what you are designing for. Beverage PET bottles do have some standards available, as do glass bottles, but things like shampoo bottles or any custom packaging usually have custom thread specifications. Frequently you might have to design a bottle to fit a particular closure, or vice versa. In which case you need to get the specs off the makers of those.

Should we add these profiles to the sketch library?

Don't know Bob. I'm not a bottle specialist but last year I had to design no less than 4 specialist bottle closures and had great difficulty in getting enough standardised information to make this task easier. The link I posted was a good one for plastic beverage bottles.

Here are some more ones:

Glass Bottles and finishes:
http://www.gpi.org/info/

You can download hundreds of pdf drawings of glass bottle neck finishes and thread details

For all things relating to closures this site has good information (albeit by paying for it)
http://www.cmadc.org/index2.tpl

There is also a standard available:
ASTM D2911-94(2005)

which can be downloaded from here:
http://webstore.ansi.org/ansidocstore/product.asp?sku=ASTM+D2911-94(2005)

Probably best to get in touch with a specialist designer working in this sectore using VX for the value of these. I think there are a few like that in the UK?

Hi all

Most of these thread designs are proprietry, companies like Unilever have invested heavily in R & D to define the rules of design - there is a scary amount of design criteria involved and although various bottles are similar, they do differ in detail.

http://www.threadspecs.com/htmlpages/homepage.htm <<< this is a good place to start. Under Thread Finishes / Specifications, you will find a comprehensive list for much of the plastic bottle industry. SP-400 is probably the cornerstone specification for much of the extrusion blowmolding industry, for Carbonated Soft Drink, the PCO-18** series. To verify, the closure supplier will be the one to confirm what specification the cap conforms to, and should supply a spec to the bottle manufacturer (or confirm which SPI spec is used).

You can try the SPI site directly. They have tons of PDFs that you can download for free.

Document "PB-2" (catalog #AU-124) gives the thread specs. I use this all the time.
