You can do that kind of thing with the VX Design Automation Language. However, it is important to ensure that Root Objects have unique names, so just a serial number as you describe would not be enough - I suggest Time Stamping the names.

Thanks for the reply. I am a new user of just a couple months. I do not know how to make use of the VX Design Automation Language and I don't know what Time Stamping is. Should I try to explain our current process? Basically it is this. We design progressive metal stamping dies and we draw approx. 100 items (objects, details) per design. We are putting the items into 3 assemblies (Main, Die & Punch). We then balloon the Die Assy and the Punch Assy and from that point on to the end of construction everything in the desgin is referred to by the Balloon Number (otherwise known as the Detail Number). The tough part, as a new user, is that we end up changing the approx. 100 object names to match the balloon numbers. It would be nice if we could control the auto ballooning to balloon (numerically) from right to left (or some type of direction) and then the balloon number appeared automajically on the description of the corresponding object. Did that make any sense?

That does make some sense...
I have received an email from Mike Lynch that gives an outline of what you need.
The reason I have mentioned time stamping is because it is an easy way to ensure that every object has a unique name. This is critical in VX, you cannot use the same name twice, even if the objects are in different VX files.
