The fastest way to force delete a layer in ZWCAD is to use the LAYDEL command, which can remove layers even if they contain objects. Simply type LAYDEL in the command line, press Enter, type N for the Name option, select the target layer from the dialog box, and click OK. Note that this operation is irreversible and cannot delete protected system layers like Layer 0 or Defpoints.
Common reasons include: the layer is currently active, contains objects (even hidden or frozen), is referenced by a block or external reference (Xref), or is a protected system layer like "0" or "Defpoints". To resolve this, switch to another layer, remove or move its contents, and use LAYDEL to bypass most restrictions—though system layers remain undeletable.
Defpoints is a system layer that cannot be deleted directly. Use the LAYMRG command to merge it into another layer (e.g., Layer 0), which effectively removes it from the layer list. Alternatively, move its objects to a different layer and run PURGE, but note that the Defpoints layer will still remain if empty—only LAYMRG fully eliminates it.
Using the LAYDEL command is an effective method for removing unnecessary layers and their contents from a ZWCAD drawing. To avoid accidental data loss, always review layer contents and ensure the drawing is saved beforehand.
