The appearance of the drawing area greatly affects the comfort and efficiency of drafting. This guide makes it easy to modify the background color according to your preferences.
Need to change the background color of drawing area, but unable to find the steps to do so. You may struggle to locate this setting because it is nested within the Options dialog box rather than in the main toolbar. As a result, beginners or those switching from other CAD software may find it confusing to customize the workspace appearance.
Step 1 : Open Drawing Window Colors
Execute OPTIONS command to open [Options] interface, go to [Display] tab, and click [Color] button, then [Drawing Window Colors] will pop up.

Step 2 : Select a New Background Color
In the [Drawing Window Colors] dialog box, since you are going to change the background color of the model space, make sure that [2d model space] is selected under [Context], and [Uniform Background] is selected under [Interface Element], then choose the color you need.
Then click the button [Apply & Close],next the [Apply] in [Options] dialog box. Finally, click [Okay] to finish your change of background color.

Here is a practical example of changing the uniform background in 2D model space from black to white.

If your background doesn’t change right after clicking [Apply & Close], make sure you also click [Apply] and [OK] in the main [Options] dialog box. It requires confirmation in both steps to finalize the change.
Some users notice that changing the model space background doesn’t affect the layout (paper space) background. This is expected behavior — layout backgrounds are managed separately. To modify the layout color, select Sheet/Layout under [Context] in the same [Drawing Window Colors] dialog box.
If you’ve changed multiple colors and want to revert to the default look, click Restore Defaults in the [Drawing Window Colors] dialog box. This will reset all display elements — including the background, grid, and crosshair.
By following these simple steps above, you can easily change the background color of the drawing area to suit your personal preference or project needs. This small customization can significantly improve visibility, comfort, and workflow efficiency.
