What is Sketch Design

Sketches are parametrically linked to the planes on which they are created: if the reference plane moves, the sketch updates accordingly during history replay. The key to effective sketch design lies in capturing Design Intent—using dimensions and geometric constraints to define the logical relationships of the shape, ensuring the model behaves as expected when modifications are made.

 

 

Difference Between Sketch, 3D Sketch, and Cosmetic Sketch in ZW3D

Sketch (Standard 2D Sketch)

Sketch is the standard 2D drawing mode in ZW3D. All geometry is created on a flat plane, forming a 2D profile. This profile serves as the foundation for solid features such as Extrude, Revolve, and Sweep. Tools like Line, Slot, Circle all belong to this environment.

 

3D Sketch

3D Sketch allows you to create curves directly in 3D space without being restricted to a single plane. 3D sketches are not projected onto a flat surface—they can bend, twist, and follow complex spatial paths. This makes them ideal for creating sweep paths, pipe centerlines, wiring routes, and other non-planar curves.

 

Cosmetic Sketch

Cosmetic Sketch is used for adding annotations and reference marks only. It does not participate in solid modeling—a rectangular profile drawn here cannot be extruded into a 3D body. Instead, it serves as a 2D markup layer for adding centerlines, thread symbols, notes, or other design annotations. It functions more like a drawing annotation tool than a modeling tool.

Sketch Settings

Sketch settings include Grid, Snap Filter and Unit, which allow users to customize the behavior of the sketch environment according to personal preference.

 

Grid

A visual reference of regularly spaced dots or lines displayed on the sketch plane. It helps users estimate distances and positions without entering numerical values.

Snap Filter

Automatically attracts the cursor to key geometric points such as endpoints, midpoints, centers, and grid intersections. ZW3D enables Smart Pick by default, which highlights valid snap points as you move the cursor.

 

For complex sketches, the Limited Entity Snap Mode only triggers snapping when the cursor directly touches a target entity, preventing accidental picks.

Smart Pick is the master switch that automatically snaps to endpoints, midpoints, centers, and other key positions as the cursor moves.
